The HFC Outside Plant (OSP) Maintenance Technician Basics Series addresses the needs of the Broadband Cable System Technician who is tasked with the preemptive troubleshooting requirements or maintenance of the broadband HFC network. The programs are visually rich with detailed explanations of each subject. Along the way, students will be presented with engaging presentations designed to draw the learner into the programs. To make sure that there is maximum retention of the material, interactive quizzes are presented and the student must correctly answer the quizzes before being allowed to proceed to the next learning objective. A final test confirms that the student has a solid comprehension of the course material. This second part of the series, AC Power, discusses how utility power is generated and transported to the HFC plant where a power supply conditions the power to another voltage and waveform. Distribution of AC power through the HFC network is described and the student learns how to identify power supply locations on network maps. The student then applies Ohm’s law to calculate the voltage going into nodes and amplifiers. Read More

Accident report studies, conducted by risk management organizations, indicate that the majority of reportable accidents are the result of veteran employees failing to pay attention or trying to shortcut the fundamental safety practices they learned when they first started their job. With this in mind, the Safety Series is designed to remind employees of the potential risks that may exist during the performance of their jobs. Rather than introducing safety training, the Safety Series provides a reminder of good safety practices, or “refresher” training, aimed at fulfilling OSHA requirements of regular safety meetings for field staff. Beyond the personal benefits of employee participation in safety training, employers can experience a significant reduction in lost work time and worker’s compensation claims due to injuries. In addition, less time is lost completing and filing accident reports, with an added benefit of reduced insurance premiums, leading to significant financial savings. The Bucket Truck Safety course pertains to all employees that drive and/or operate a bucket truck. The utility and flexibility of a bucket truck exposes the operator to dangerous elements that range from working above the ground to parking at a busy intersection.   The Bucket Truck Safety course reminds the student of the regulations that apply to bucket truck operations as well as key safety protocols such as daily inspections, driving and parking considerations, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and techniques for positioning equipment.     Completion Time: This is a one-lesson course that has an intended completion time of 2 to 3 hours or less. Students are encouraged to take the course as soon as they complete their enrollment. The maximum allotment to complete the course is up to 30 days after enrollment.    opXL Learning Systems is the Official Learning Partner of SCTE, and this course is also available through SCTE. This first part of the series, Cable Math, takes the student on a tour through Ohm’s law, power generation, AC/DC principles and foundational requirements that every technician should know to be competent on the job. In order to understand the relationships of signal levels, noise and distortion in HFC network operations the student will learn how to perform calculations with ratios, fractions, decimals, exponents and logarithms. Safe driving practices are the responsibility of all motorists. In this era, many people have developed motoring habits that could compromise their own safety as well as the safety of others. Although targeted to employees that drive company–owned trucks, the Driving Safety course is appropriate for all employees that drive. At minimum, the non-driver of company–owned trucks will gain an appreciation for some of the challenges and responsibilities that come with driving a company-owned automobile. Completion Time: This is a one-lesson course that has an intended completion time of 2 to 3 hours or less. The Electrical Safety – Customer Premises course provides important safety protocols that can be used in the protection of all employees as well as their families. Electricity is a powerful and potentially dangerous form of energy that is in almost all customer premises. The Electrical Safety – Customer Premises course reminds the student about the risks of working with electricity and offers tips on how to avoid exposure to shocks and to test electrical outlets for hazards.    Completion Time: This is a one-lesson course that has an intended completion time of 2 to 3 hours or less.
